The Battle of the Bands!

They are out to make you fitter by providing information about your health and fitness - from steps walked to calore is burnt and in some cases, even the state of your sleep and your heart rate. And that too without blowing a massive hole in your wallet. But which of the Xiaomi Mi Band 2, Intex FitRist Pulzz and Goqii 2 is the fitness band for you? Rohan Pal spent some time using all three wearables, And he now takes a closer look at the fitness trio, pros, cons and all.

A few years ago, a fitness band was something for the super niche (and rich) fitness fanatics. Today, however, fitness bands are steadily becoming more mainstream. And a major reason for this is the fact that many players are rolling out these devices at surprisingly affordable prices. Consider the trio of fitness bands that we propose to cover in this article - the Intex FitRist Pulzz, Xiaomi Mi Band 2 and Goqii 2.0 smartband, all of which are good devices in their own right and yet cost under Rs 2,000 each - the Mi Band 2 has just been officially launched in India as we go to print and has been officially priced at Rs 1,999.The question of course, is: but which of these three is the best? Well, we decided to pit them against each other on different parameters to get an answer.

Design

When you think of such a budget segment, people tend to get skeptical about the build quality of the fitness band. But they need not have any fears in this case. All three bands come with solid design and are of good quality - nothing creaky or cheap here. Each of them comes with an OLED display, which was unimaginable at this price point a few years ago. The screen of the Mi Band 2 is a smaller as compared to Goqii 2.0 and Intex FitRist Pulzz. Other the other hand, Intex FitRist has a more appealing design as it sports a curved display which looks good when you wear it. But when it comes to quality of the bands used in each of the fitness tracker then Goqii 2.0 leads the way as it has a softer and most comfortable band as compared to the both. But overall, if we need to pick a winner then it has to be FitRist Pulzz as it comes with a more compelling design as compared to both its competitors.

Winner: Intex FitRist Pulzz

Compatibility

All the three fitness tracker are compatible iOS as well as Android. So we guess we need to give a tie in this round as each of them support smartphones running Android 4.4 KitKat or above and iOS 7 or above.

Winner: Tie

Features

The Mi Band 2 comes with an IP67 certification making it water and dust resistant. The device comes with optical heart rate monitor and the device also counts steps, shows calorie burn and vibrates when you receive any notification. On the other hand, Intex FitRist Pulzz has a lot to offer as well. The smartband also comes with a heart rate sensor, does include most of the feature you will require in fitness band, and has a cherry on top: you can also control music, get vibrations on calls and see the caller’s name or number. It even has a shutter button through which you can take photos. The Goqii 2.0 is not that far behind, although the device doesn’t sport a heart rate sensor. But it does all other things you would expect from a fitness tracker like, step count, calorie burn and distance covered. And each of them comes with sleep tracking mechanism. But when it comes to sheer number of features then Intex takes slight lead as it has more to offer than Mi Band 2 and Goqii 2.0.

Winner: Intex FitRist Pulzz

App

Each of the smartbands comes with their own app. Xiaomi has it MiFit application which is pretty easy to navigate and comes with some minimal design, making it easier for you to keep a track of your daily activities. On the other hand, the application from Intex is rather plain and can be confusing for some. But Goqii has a far more advanced options and one of the USP of the device is that it allows you connect to a trainer and doctor in real-time through its app. You get your personal trainer, who constantly monitors your activites stats and try to make changes accordingly by giving right advice to you. And this makes it a clear winner in this segment.

Winner: Goqii 2.0

Performance

It is a neck-on-neck competition between the three of them. Starting with tracking , we find that Intex FitRist was slightly over counting the steps, the real competition here is between Goqii 2.0 and Xiaomi Mi Band 2 as their readings were close enough, but Mi Band 2 was clearly the closest to the actual results. In terms of heart rate monitoring, Goqii 2.0 was out of the picture as it does not sport one. The Intex FitRist Pulzz tended to show an exaggerated heart rate with average being heart rate 70 bpm to 120 bpm, while the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 was showing an average 80 to 90 bpm, which was consistent enough. Also in other departments like sleep monitoring, calories burned etc.,we found that the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 was much more accurate than the other two fitness trackers.

Winner: Xiaomi Mi Band 2

Battery Life

Each of these fitness bands gives a reasonably well battery backup, but Goqii 2.0 has performed better as compared to the other two in the battery department. Although, both Mi Band 2 and Pulzz can last up to 7 days quite comfortably, but the battery backup of Goqii 2.0 was better in all senses. It was also relatively easy to charge Goqii 2.0 as it has an inbuilt USB port, which can be connected to any USB port for charging, and did not need a proprietary port, like the others.

Winner: Goqii 2.0

Accessories

You might be wondering why we have taken accessories as a parameter for this versus. Well, I assure you that it is an important one. It is important to have availability of range of straps for a fitness tracker, so that everyone has the liberty to choose to the band according to their needs and tastes. Although, Intex FitRist Pulzz comes with a free strap, it is Xiaomi Mi Band 2, which has a variety of straps ranging from silicon to stainless steel that takes the title here. And the best part is that you can use the band of Mi Band and Mi Band Pulse as well with this fitness band. Goqii does have a limited option of band to choose from, so we have to give this round to Mi Band 2.

Winner: Xiaomi Mi Band 2

Price

Coming on the price point, the Intex FitRist Pulzz comes with a price tag of Rs 1,799, while the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 which has just been officially launched in India has been priced at a very affordable Rs 1,999. While the Goqii 2.0 comes with a different subscription offers starting with Rs 1,999 for 3 months, Rs 2,999 for 6 months, Rs 3,999 for 12 months. The price Force is strong with Intex on this one.

Winner: Intex FitRist Pulzz

Conclusion

At the end, it all boils down to the consumer preference as each of these fitness trackers has something unique to offer. On one hand Xiaomi Mi band 2 come with water and dust resistance and also has a unique algorithm which distinguishes between light and deep sleep. While on the other, Intex FitRist Pulzz sports some interesting features like controlling music and taking photos through the smartband. And finally Goqii 2.0 comes with a proper ecosystem through which you can be monitored and advised accordingly by watching your daily stats by some professional trainers and doctor. Each of them is special in their own right and it all depends how you want to use the fitness tracker. It’s up to you to choose. Those who prefer a human touch with real time monitoring would prefer the Goqii 2.0, those who want something stylish would perhaps feel their pulses quickening when they see the FitRist Pulzz while those who want a fitness band at its pure and simple best with some very good sleep tracking and a good heart rate sensor would love the Mi Band 2. All three bands churn out terrific fitness numbers - it all really depends on what you want!
