Coolpad has always come up with well-designed smartphones and the Mega 2.5D is no different. The device looks good with a golden rim running around the edges - we got the gold version and it does gives a premium look with a unibody design. The smartphone is just 7.85 mm thick and is positively lightweight at just 140 grams. It comes with a 2.5D glass covering, which is a luxury at this price point. The screen comes with thin black bezels, giving an illusion of an edge-to-edge display when the screen is turned off. Above the display are the secondary camera coupled with the earpiece and the usual array of sensors. The sides have the volume rocker and power/ display buttons, the back comes with a matte finish with secondary camera sitting on the top with a LED flash below it, and the speaker grille on the bottom. On the top you will the audio jack, while at the base there microUSB port. On the display front, the device comes with a 5.5-inch HD display, which has good viewing angles, although it is not the brightest we have seen.
On the software front, the device runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with the company’s latest CoolUI 8.0 running on top of it. The company has added a C-Button which generally is shortcut for all the different yet important features we use on daily basis.
The Coolpad Mega 2.5D is powered by a quad-core MediaTek MT6735P processor coupled with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage which can expanded up to 32GB. The phone comes with connectivity options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, FM Radio, 4G and USB OTG. The smartphone is decently specced and handles most of the daily tasks quite effectively and multi-tasking is smooth all thanks to the 3GB RAM. It handled casual games like Being Salman and Subway Surfer without any noticeable lag. Call connectivity is good and both the SIM support 4G for all Indian bands. But the speaker performance was average and lacking of fingerprint sensor was a turn off (they were one to spoil us with this option).
The Coolpad Mega 2.5D is powered by a 2500mAh battery which manages to last a day with normal usage.
With a price tag of Rs 6,999, Coolpad Mega 2.5D is a good option for those who are looking for a budget smartphone, but faces stiff competition with the likes of Lenovo K5, Xiaomi Redmi 3s and company’s own Coolpad Note 3 Lite.
The 8.0-megapixel rear camera delivers some above average performance in the broad daylight, although low light performance was not the greatest. The front-facing camera (also 8.0-megapixels) took some good selfies.
