Twitter claims that all through the Gujarat polls hindutva and religion is the most discussed topics, development issues on threat
From December 1 onwards, the social networking tycoon Twitter is said to have recorded over 1.9 million discussions and mention of Gujarat election on its podium. Not only that, the Twitter data also shows that Narendra Modi is the most viewed and discussed personality on the platform, followed by Rahul Gandhu, Congress President.
The data shows that Indian citizens were deeply interested in topics such as hindutva and development, although the campaign for the Congress election was focused on demonetization and GST. According to the Twitter analysis from December 1-18, Hindutva and religion was the second most important topics discussed along with development issue, the most discussed issue raised in the campaign.
Mahima Kaul, Head of Public Policy & Government, Twitter India, “Our data indicates that more people are responding to Tweets in Hindi, and leaders are reacting to speeches and statements directly on Twitter. It’s exciting to see how people across India are watching videos and Tweets from rallies held all over Gujarat, evident of a more vibrant politically involved community.”
This was the first time, Twitter showed the live streaming of Indian election, thereby helping more people to engage and the view it in real-time. Twitter India said in a statement, “People all over the world leveraged Twitter to see what’s happening in India as the nation develops as a cultural, economic and political force to be reckoned with.”
Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani and OBC leader Alpesh Thakore appeared as the second and third most discussed candidates respectively, while Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani also emerged to be the most discussed person on the platform.
