After making deeper in-roads into the Indian smartphone market with a huge number of products in each price segment, Xiaomi recently came up with its most expensive smartphone in India, the Mi Mix 2. But what makes this phone so special? Haider Ali Khan delves into various aspects of the device.

Xiaomi has made deeper in-roads into the Indian smartphone market with huge number of products in each price segment. The company has managed to reach all the sectors of population using smartphones; every now and then you will encounter an individual using Xiaomi phone. The achievement of the company is only because of its variable smartphones price range which gave the company an upper hand to attract the users. The Redmi Note series took the smartphone market by storm and made great sale. Not just the Redmi series other smartphones of the company also managed to attract the users. In this review we will be shading light on the Xiaomi most expensive smartphone in India Mi Mix 2 which ranges between Rs 35,000 to 36,000.

The Mi Mix 2 has a delightful look with its ceramic back and has an aluminium frame with zero gaps. The ceramic material is scratchproof and it can stand any sharp material which can by chance put scratch on your phone. The back though gets your finger marks wherever you touch the device but it can be cleaned easily. The device is very comfortable to hold and operate. On the rear side of Mi Mix 2 there is 12 MP camera in the centre with gold plated protruding rim and below the camera there is the fingerprint sensor and there is something new at the back of the device which is that instead of ‘Mi’ logo the device is saying “Mix designed by Xiaomi”. At the bottom of the device there is USB Type C port that acts as charging port as well as the headphones jack and ditches the usual 3.5mm jack. The company is giving an adapter to convert for you to use your regular earphones with the smartphone. At the right side of the device there is the power button and giving company to power button there are the volume rockers. On the left there is dual nano SIM card slot.

The Mi Mix 2 is featuring 5.99 inch full HD plus no bezel display on three sides but just a tiny one at the chin, where it is having the front camera at the right corner and the notification LED light in the centre. The display has been made more delighting with the 18:9 aspect ratio with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 and 403 ppi. With such display size and resolution you cannot miss any detail of what has been portraying in the device. The colour reproduction is accurate and the viewing angles are impressive as well. There is also a reading mode option to reduce the blue light emission.

The Mi Mix 2 has 12 MP Sony IMX368 rear camera with 4 axis Optical Image Stabilization. The rear camera captures good quality of images which are clear and crisp. The rear camera performs well even in dim light. The overall performance of the rear is quite average and it could have been further improved. The selfie camera is of 5 MP which is loaded with beautification feature. The selfie camera is not upto expectation because when you are paying 36,000 for a smartphone you hope for selfie camera which will give you thrilling images but the Mi Mix 2 front camera only gives average selfies plus the placement of the camera is towards the bottom of the screen which is something that is confusing for the users. The front camera does add to the disadvantage of the device.

The Mi Mix 2 is powered by a 2.45GHz octa-core Snapdragon 835 processor SoC which is powerful enough to make you run your applications like an easy walk in the park and it should be expected from any device which is having such price range. The power of the processor is further enhanced with 6 GB RAM of the device. The RAM of the device will let you run any app with ease. If you like playing big sized games with high graphics then that experience is also impressive because the Mi Mix 2 runs any game smoothly. The display plus processor plus RAM are giving fusion of powerful performance to let you play any games or to perform any task. The storage is immense as well, as the Mi Mix 2 is offering 128 GB of internal storage which is enough to store anything you wish for. The external storage cannot be expanded as there is no microSD card slot but when there is such internal storage of 128 GB there is no requirement of further expanding it. The Mi Mix 2 has the latest Android operating system which is Android 7.1.1 and is paired with Xiaomi’s own MIUI 8.5.1.0 software. You won’t find app drawer in the Mi Mix 2. The device is offering a second space which enables users to have different profiles with separate wallpapers, apps, files and photos. The Mi Mix 2 though forces you to keep some preloaded apps with third party such as Amazon, Microsoft Office and WPS Office that can be uninstalled.

The Xiaomi Mix 2 is having a powerful non removable battery of 3,400mAh. The battery power is enough to give you long hour of entertainment and fun. The device last for long time with a single charge and it lasts throughout the day. There is rapid charger as well to charge the device at a faster rate.

Overall the device is powerful and delivers great performance but the disappointing aspects are the cameras of Mi Mix 2.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 definitely deserves applause for the new concept of putting the front camera at the front bottom but, that could also turn suicidal for it. The powerful processor adds value to an Rs 36,000 smartphone. Surely, Mi Mix 2 is a mixed bag of surprises and few misses as well.
