Rumours are doing rounds that Apple is planning to upgrade its AI-focused cloud servers soon.

Apple reportedly working to upgrade servers that are currently running on the M2 Ultra chip to the M4 chip starting next year.

These specialised servers are known as Private Cloud Compute (PCC) modules and are designed to handle certain Apple Intelligence requests securely in the cloud.

A report from Nikkei Asia reveals that Apple is in talks with Foxconn to set up new AI servers in Taiwan.

According to sources, this location is important as it will allow Apple to “tap the engineering talent and R&D resources” that also worked for Nvidia, also a Foxconn client with a strong presence in the region.

Apple Intelligence combines on-device and cloud processing to handle various requests. When an on-device language model can’t fulfil a request, the PCC modules process it with end-to-end encryption.

As Apple describes it: “For the first time ever, Private Cloud Compute extends the industry-leading security and privacy of Apple devices into the cloud, making sure that personal user data sent to PCC isn’t accessible to anyone other than the user — not even to Apple. Built with custom Apple silicon and a hardened operating system designed for privacy, we believe PCC is the most advanced security architecture ever deployed for cloud AI compute at scale.”

Earlier this year, 9to5Mac first reported on Apple’s PCC modules, noting that while most currently use the M2 Ultra chip, some lighter-use modules run on the M1 chip.

Now, according to the Nikkei Asia report, Apple’s upcoming PCC modules will feature the newly introduced M4 chip, which brings notable improvements to AI processing.

The M4 series offers significant advances for handling AI tasks, so it’s not surprising that Apple would choose this chip for its cloud servers.

While the report doesn’t specify which M4 variant Apple will use, it’s likely to be the yet-to-be-announced M4 Ultra chip, given Apple’s recent releases of the M4 Pro and M4 Max versions.

FAQs

Q1. What is Apple planning to upgrade in its AI-focused cloud servers next year?
