Carl Pei confirms Nothing Phone (2) will be powered by Snapdragon 8+ Gen1

HIGHLIGHTS

* Nothing Phone (2) is confirmed to be powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 SoC.
* The handset is a clear upgrade from Phone (1) which came with the Snapdragon 778G+.
* Nothing Phone (2) launch date is yet to be revealed.

In March, Nothing CEO Carl Pei announced that the Nothing Phone (2) would be launched later this year. He also hinted that the upcoming smartphone will sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 series chipset and focus more on software experience.

Soon, the rumour mill speculated that the Nothing Phone (2) would be powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

In a recent tweet, Carl Pei confirmed that the Nothing Phone (2) will indeed be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. Compared to the Nothing Phone (1) which features the Snapdragon 778G, apps on the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 open almost twice as faster.

The former OnePlus co-founder said that apart from performance gains, the new chipset brings huge improvements to the battery life, network connectivity and camera.

Since the Image Signal Processor on the chipset can capture more than 4,000 times the data captured by Nothing Phone (1), it will offer advanced features like Raw HDR and 4K video recording at 30fps.

At the Mobile World Congress 2023, Carl Pei also confirmed that the Nothing Phone (2) will support satellite connectivity. However, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 packs the X65 modem, which does not feature satellite connectivity, hinting that the upcoming phone might sport a modified version of the chipset.

After the successful launch of the Nothing Phone (1) last year, Carl Pei’s brainchild, Nothing is gearing up to introduce the Nothing Phone (2) shortly.

The handset will come as a premium offering, unlike the predecessor which is a mid-range offering. During MWC 2023 event in February, Nothing had confirmed the Phone (2) would come with the Snapdragon 8-series chipset.

Now, Carl Pei took to Twitter to announce the Phone (2) will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 SoC, which is again in line with the rumours and leaks.

Nothing Phone (2) Chipset

Furthermore, the top executive explains the reason behind choosing the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 SoC.

* Firstly, Carl Pei acknowledges the new chipset is a clear upgrade from Phone (1) which came with the Snapdragon 778G+.

* Probably having used the Nothing Phone (2), Carl Pei says that during the initial tests, the app opening speed is twice as fast compared to Phone (1).

* There is an impressive 80 percent performance improvement.

* Carl Pei says that opting for the Snapdragon 8 Series rather than the 7 Series brings significant improvements across the board including battery life, network connectivity, and camera capabilities.

* The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 features an 18-bit Image Signal Processor (ISP) capable of capturing over 4,000 times more camera data than the ISP used on the Phone (1). This results in the Phone (2) camera offering advanced features like Raw HDR and 4K recording at 60 fps.

* The Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 is based on 4nm TSMC and offers stable performance.

Interestingly, Carl Pei talks about pricing as well. The top executive says that “Sometimes the latest technology comes at a cost which isn’t always justified from a user benefit standpoint. Choosing Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 ensures that Phone (2) remains accessible while delivering a significantly improved experience compared to Phone (1).“
