Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic Unveiled Featuring Better Drop Protection, First To Launch On Motorola Phone

Highlights

  • Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic is designed to offer better drop resistance on rough surfaces.
  • The upcoming Motorola device will be the first to feature Gorilla Glass Ceramic.
  • Corning uses ceramic nanocrystals for added toughness, similar to its Ceramic Shield developed for Apple devices.

Corning has introduced a new protective glass layer, Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic, for smartphones. As the name suggests, this version incorporates ceramic to enhance toughness. This new launch comes after Corning’s recent ceramic Gorilla Armor 2, which was found on the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

The company confirmed that the first phone to feature the new Gorilla Glass Ceramic will be an upcoming Motorola device. Here’s more about the recent announcement.

Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic – Stronger Drop Protection

Corning claims that Gorilla Glass Ceramic offers better drop resistance on rough surfaces compared to other aluminosilicate glasses. The company tested it by dropping it ten times from one meter onto a surface designed to mimic rough terrain (180-grit sandpaper).

The competing aluminosilicate glass reportedly broke on the first drop. However, it’s important to note that these tests were conducted in Corning’s internal labs.

“In Corning lab tests, Gorilla Glass Ceramic survived 10 repeated drops from one meter on surfaces replicating asphalt. An alternative aluminosilicate glass typically failed on the first drop,” the company notes in a press release.

For comparison, Gorilla Armor 2 is said to have survived drops from up to 2.2 meters onto a surface simulating concrete, though the exact number of drops wasn’t specified.

Motorola to Debut Gorilla Glass Ceramic

Motorola is set to be the first brand to use Gorilla Glass Ceramic in one of its upcoming devices, though the exact model hasn’t been revealed yet. This follows Motorola’s partnership with Corning, announced last year, to bring Gorilla Glass protection to its smartphones.

More details about Gorilla Glass Ceramic should emerge closer to its official launch.

Corning’s Ceramic Glass for Android And Apple

While Gorilla Glass Ceramic is aimed at Android phones, Corning has previously developed Ceramic Shield for Apple devices. The iPhone 12, launched in 2020, was the first to feature Ceramic Shield, and the latest iPhone 16 lineup continues to use an updated version.

This glass is made using a high-temperature crystallisation process, embedding ceramic nanocrystals into the glass for added durability.
