Introduction

Elon Musk just recently took over as the new CEO of Twitter, where barely a month after doing so, has ushered in a sea of change that have received polarizing reviews, but the latest one being that he plans to test Neuralink implants in humans the coming year.

Highlights

  • The Neuralink device that is the size of a large coin is designed to be implanted in the skull, with ultra-thin wires going directly into the brain
  • Musk’s company Neuralink has already sought permission for testing brain chip implants in human beings
  • Apparently, it is one of the many companies that is planning to develop chip to connect to humans via Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Musk Goes Ahead with Neuralink Chip Implantation Project in Human Beings

If you’re thinking that Elon Musk is that owner of Tesla and Twitter alone, then you’re wrong because he holds the same position for two other companies, SpaceX and Neuralink, which deal in satellite communications and brain-computer interfaces, respectively.

Elon Musk has given countless interviews in the past decade when it came to ‘big talks’ where he is either talking about Tesla’s self-driving tech or SpaceX’s capacity, where the former is making a slow and steady progress, even though it is far from what Musk had promised initially.

The latest buzz is that Neuralink is testing its implants in human beings for which Musk has made strong statements saying that the project will start within six months, which would be around June 2023, even though this isn’t the first time that he’s made such a big promise.

Whether or not he will be able to fulfill it is another topic for another day but the reports of Neuralink to start testing on humans has been going on since early 2020, which has been after the company had used the chip in a monkey to great success.

However, testing it on animals and human beings are two different things because for doing the latter you need to take several approvals from many authoritative sources as the tech is complex and can go horribly wrong, leading to disastrous consequences.

The latest implant version was unveiled recently as Neuralink showed a robot that will perform future operations and even though the tests proved successful on the monkey, the poor animal did not survive to see it complete, which is why the company has landed in turmoil and facing serious objections from Animal Rights Activists.

Conclusion

Elon Musk has confirmed that Neuralink will not be taking any uncalculated risks and will make sure that the chip is 100% perfect to be tested on human beings before doing so, for which the company needs to take the approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
