Elon Musk’s xAI has officially launched the latest version of its AI model Grok 3 along with a smaller variant called Grok 3-mini. These new models come with improved reasoning capabilities and aim to compete with top AI models like OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Google’s Gemini.
Grok AI has already been powering generative AI features on X (formerly Twitter) and analysing images. With Grok 3, xAI is taking things to the next level.
Starting the launch demo streamed on his official X handle, Elon Musk explained the meaning of Grok saying, “The term comes from Robert Heinlein’s novel Stranger in a Strange Land. It’s used by a character raised on Mars and means to fully and profoundly understand something. The word ‘grok’ conveys deep understanding, and empathy is an important part of that.”
“We’re very excited to present Grok3, which is, we think, an order of magnitude more capable than Grok2 in a very short period of time. And that’s thanks to the hard work of an incredible team, and I’m honoured to work with such a great team,” said Elon Musk at the launch demo.

During the live demonstration, xAI researcher Igor Babuschkin asked Grok 3 to calculate and plot a trajectory from Earth to Mars and back. The AI’s reasoning process, known as Chain of Thought (CoT), was visible. However, Musk mentioned that some of its internal logic is intentionally obscured to prevent AI distillation, a method used by developers to train AI by copying outputs from other models.
Grok 3 was also asked to design a new video game combining elements of Tetris and Bejeweled.

Grok 3 Powered by a Supercomputer with 200,000 GPUs
Grok 3 has been trained on an enormous cluster of 200,000 GPUs at xAI’s Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee, US. Built-in just six to eight months, Colossus gives Grok 3 10 times more computing power than its predecessor.
Elon Musk described Grok 3 as “an order of magnitude more capable than Grok 2” and “maximally truth-seeking AI, even if that truth is sometimes at odds with what is politically correct.”
Alongside Grok 3, xAI introduced Grok 3-mini, a smaller and faster version designed to respond to questions more quickly.
Grok 3 – Advanced Reasoning and AI Benchmarks
Grok 3 completed its pre-training in January 2025 and was tested across multiple AI benchmarks, including evaluations of math skills, code generation and scientific knowledge.
A special “Reasoning” version of Grok 3 has also been introduced. Similar to OpenAI’s o1 and DeepSeek-R1, this model can ‘think through’ complex problems. xAI has released two variants:
- Grok 3 Reasoning
- Grok 3-mini Reasoning
According to xAI, Grok 3 Reasoning outperformed the best version of OpenAI’s o3-mini in several benchmarks including AIME 2025, a new test for mathematical problem-solving. These reasoning models are now available on the Grok app.
Since its launch nearly two years ago, Grok AI has positioned itself as an “anti-woke” alternative to mainstream AI models from companies like Google and OpenAI. Unlike competitors that enforce stricter safeguards, Grok is known for providing unfiltered responses, especially on political and sensitive topics.
How to Access Grok 3?
For those interested in trying out Grok 3, xAI is rolling it out today starting with Premium+ subscribers on X at first. Users will have to update their X app to get access to the latest advanced features.
If you are interested in early access to Grok 3, you can sign up for Premium Plus.
Moreover, xAI is also launching a subscription tier called Super Grok. It is specifically for tech enthusiasts who want to explore the most advanced capabilities and also get the earliest access to every new feature. This subscription is available for both the just-launched website grok.com and the Grok app.
