Samsung introduced the irregular heart rhythm notification feature with the Galaxy Watch 6 series in 2023. We have been hearing several stories since then where users credited Galaxy Watches for detecting heart issues early and helping them get timely medical attention.
In a recent case reported by multiple media outlets, a 61-year-old woman shared that her Galaxy Watch detected atrial fibrillation (Afib), a condition where the upper chambers of the heart beat irregularly and often too fast. While not immediately life-threatening, untreated Afib can lead to serious complications like strokes.
At first, the woman ignored the notification. However, after receiving four alerts about irregular heart rhythms, she decided to seek medical help. Doctors confirmed she had Afib, and she is now on medication.
While sharing her experience on Reddit, she said, “Around midnight on Saturday, I received a notification from the Galaxy Watch saying that an irregular heart rhythm was detected.[…] I measured an electrocardiogram (ECG) according to the UI guide displayed on the Galaxy Watch screen and received the results of an atrial fibrillation (Afib) diagnosis.” (machine translated from Korean).
“After confirming that the electrocardiogram results showed atrial fibrillation, I called the health insurance counselling nurse, and around this time, I felt a slight pain from the left side of my neck down to my shoulder,” she further added.
Samsung has since expanded the ECG and blood pressure (BP) monitoring features to the Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 4 series in India. In a previous report, a Galaxy Watch 5 user discovered they had pericarditis, which is an inflammation of the membrane around the heart through an ECG test.
What’s incredible is how the advancement in wearable technology is really helping users catch serious health conditions before they become severe.
