The smartphone launches scheduled for 2025 have started generating buzz online with leaks and rumours now surfacing at regular intervals. Recently, the upcoming Google Pixel 9a has surfaced again in a hands-on leak showcasing what appears to be a prototype design ahead of its expected launch next year.

The hands-on images shared by Twitter user @feni_book reveal the phone’s front and back.

On the front, the Pixel 9a sticks to a familiar design with flat edges, minimal bezels and a centred punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera. However, the back shows a significant departure from previous models. Unlike the Pixel 9 series and its predecessor the Pixel 8a, the Pixel 9a adopts a boxy chassis with rounded corners.

On the back, the horizontal camera bar has been replaced with a smaller pill-shaped camera module on the left. The previous camera has been a signature design element of the lineup since the Pixel 6.  Now this new module houses dual camera sensors and an LED flash.

The back panel also sports a unique textured finish along with a logo that differs from Google’s standard branding indicating that this is likely an Engineering Validation Test (EVT) unit used for internal testing before mass production.

A sticker on the back shows the IMEI number, which when checked confirms the device as a Google product with the model number GTF7P.

This isn’t the first appearance of the Pixel 9a. Earlier leaks including a prototype in August and subsequent renders showcased a similar design moving away from Google’s signature “visor” camera bar.

As for expected specification, rumours suggest the Pixel 9a will feature a modified Tensor G4 processor, a slightly larger body than the Pixel 8a, a new primary camera and a bigger battery.

The phone is expected to launch as early as March 2025.
