This moniker perfectly captured the union of Google’s DeepMind and Brain AI research teams under one integrated force in April 2022. 

The twins aspect fit well as the DeepMind and Brain teams joined efforts on this ambitious multimodal model,” explains Jeff Dean, Gemini’s co-lead.

The name also evokes the adaptable, perceptive nature of the Gemini astrological sign.

But there was another key influence – Project Gemini, NASA’s pioneering 1960s space program.

Bridging the first human spaceflights and Moon landings, Gemini tested critical techniques like spacewalks and spacecraft docking. 

This resonated with Google’s moonshot goals for general AI capabilities.

One Giant Leap

Like Project Gemini paving the lunar path, Google’s Gemini models could help unlock AI breakthroughs as momentous as the Moon landing.

The first versions arrived in December 2022 – Gemini 1.0 in Ultra, Pro and Nano sizes, followed by 1.5 Pro and the recent 1.5 Flash.

“We’re fascinated by the universe’s vast array of star sizes, like our Gemini models,” notes co-lead Oriol Vinyals. “Who knows, perhaps an ‘Apollo’ successor will follow Gemini one day?”

For now, the Gemini era is shining bright, bringing Google’s latest AI advancements to billions worldwide.
