It’s raining updates on Apple foldable devices. First, it was the recent WSJ report revealing some hints about the foldable iPhones and laptops. Now, a recent Bloomberg report suggests we might just also get a foldable iPad as soon as 2028. Here’s what we know from the recent report.
Apple Foldable iPad To Be The Company’s First Foldable Device?
According to Bloomberg’s trusted Apple reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is reportedly preparing to launch its first foldable device in 2028. Gurman describes it as “something akin to a giant iPad that unfolds into the size of two iPad Pros side-by-side.”
The foldable iPad is rumoured to have a massive display of around 20 inches when unfolded and now Gurman highlights that it will be a “single, uninterrupted piece of glass.” Apple is aiming to perfect the design by minimising if not eliminating the crease often seen in foldable displays.
In his latest power-on newsletter, Gurman writes, “Prototypes of this new product within Apple’s industrial design group have a nearly invisible crease. But it’s too early to tell if Apple will get rid of it altogether. Samsung Electronics Co., which launched its first foldable phone five years ago, has tried unsuccessfully to remove the crease.”
Apple is clearly focused on creating a device with a big screen that’s portable enough to fit in a backpack, rather than a smaller foldable tablet designed to fit in your pocket.
The foldable iPad is expected to run a version of iPadOS but may also include support for macOS apps. Gurman suggests, “I don’t believe it will be a true iPad-Mac hybrid, but the device will have elements of both. By the time 2028 rolls around, iPadOS should be advanced enough to run macOS apps.”
While it’s not yet clear whether this is speculation or insider information, the idea of macOS app support on iPads is a significant development that could expand the device’s functionality.
As for foldable iPhones, it has now been confirmed by both Bloomberg’s Gurman and a recent Wall Street Journal report that the earliest we might see one is 2026.
