Huawei has just introduced its latest foldable smartphone the Huawei Pura X and it’s unlike anything we’ve seen before. It sits somewhere between a flip phone and a book-style foldable, featuring a design that Huawei calls wide folding. Here’s all we know about the device.
Huawei Pura X – A Unique Foldable Form Factor
The Pura X was unveiled in China and it resembles a flip phone-style foldable with a cover display beside the cameras. However, when unfolded, it takes on a much wider shape rather than the usual tall, narrow design of traditional smartphones.
The hinge sits on the side when folded, giving it a fresh and unconventional look.
When fully open, the Pura X measures 143.2mm in height and 91.7mm in width, making it much wider than typical smartphones. When folded, it becomes 91.7mm by 74.3mm, making it compact but still uniquely proportioned.
The Pura X features a composite super-tough laminated structure, including a titanium alloy support layer, UTG glass, and a basalt water-drop hinge structure. It is also IPX8-rated, meaning it can handle water exposure up to 2 meters deep.
Huawei Pura X – Display and Features
The Pura X comes with a 6.3-inch foldable OLED screen featuring a 16:10 aspect ratio, making it ideal for wider content viewing. It also has a 3.5-inch outer OLED display with a 1:1 aspect ratio, allowing for easy access to notifications, messaging, health apps, and music controls. Both screens support 1-120Hz LTPO adaptive refresh rate and 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming for a smooth and eye-friendly experience.
The cover screen offers customisable wallpapers including live animations, and allows users to take calls without unfolding the device. The earpiece is placed right next to the LED flash, meaning users will hold the phone with the cover screen facing them while on a call.
Huawei has packed the Pura X with a quad-camera system:
- 50MP RYYB main camera (f/1.6 aperture)
- 40MP RYYB ultra-wide camera (f/2.2 aperture)
- 8MP 3.5x telephoto camera
- 5MP multi-spectral channel red maple primary colour camera
It also includes AI-enhanced photography features, like dual-screen photography, mirror selfies, and hovering photography.
For connectivity, the phone supports second-gen Lingxi communication (5A speed) and Tiantong satellite communication, ensuring stable performance even in challenging environments. It also includes an ultra-cold three-dimensional heat dissipation system for improved thermal management.
The Pura X runs on HarmonyOS 5, which Huawei claims brings a 40% boost in performance and integrates a Star Shield security architecture for better protection.
Huawei has equipped the Pura X with two silicon-carbon negative electrode batteries, totalling 4720mAh. It supports 66W wired fast charging and 40W wireless fast charging, ensuring quick power-ups.
