Instagram is reportedly considering launching a standalone app for Reels, possibly taking advantage of TikTok’s uncertain situation in the US. While there’s no official confirmation yet, discussions around the “Reels app” have begun.

According to a report from The Information, Instagram head Adam Mosseri told employees that a separate app for Reels is under consideration. However, it’s unclear whether Reels will remain on Instagram or move entirely to the new app.

image

This move could help Instagram attract more users to Reels, especially since TikTok was briefly banned in the US and is now facing a 75-day deadline to comply with new laws.

Reels have become a major part of Instagram, with the platform heavily prioritising short-form video content. Instagram even launched a video editing app for Reels called Edits, which many saw as a direct competitor to the editing app called CapCut owned by TikTok’s parent company ByteDance.

Meanwhile, Instagram is under fire for showing users Reels with violent and explicit content even when their algorithm preferences don’t align with such videos. Some users reported seeing extreme violence and uncensored adult content even after selecting the “Not Interested” option.

Meta has since acknowledged and fixed the issue, according to CNBC. There’s also an option to reset the algorithm, but it’s unclear if all users are still experiencing the problem.

With TikTok’s future in the US uncertain, Instagram could be making a strategic move by giving Reels its own platform. We expect more details might emerge soon.

FAQs

Q1. Is Instagram planning to launch a standalone app for Reels?

Answer. Instagram is reportedly considering launching a standalone app for Reels, but there is no official confirmation yet.

Q2. Why might Instagram launch a separate app for Reels?

Answer. Launching a separate app for Reels could help Instagram attract more users, especially given TikTok’s uncertain situation in the US.

Q3. What content issue has Instagram faced with Reels?

Answer. Instagram has faced criticism for showing users violent and explicit Reels content, even when their algorithm preferences didn’t align with such videos. Meta has since acknowledged and fixed the issue.

iPhone 16e Reviews Highlight Large Battery and Impressive C1 Chip Performance, Criticizes Some Drawbacks

0

Highlights

  • Reviewers reveal the iPhone 16e has a 3,961mAh battery.
  • Apple’s in-house 5G modem C1 chip performs well with comparable efficiency to Qualcomm’s modems.
  • Notable drawbacks include the lack of MagSafe support and reliance on older Qi wireless charging technology.

Apple is known for not revealing the exact battery size of its products. However, the brand launched its value-focused iPhone 16e recently claiming a larger battery. In its launch video, Apple claimed the 16e offers “unprecedented” battery life for a phone of this class. Now that reviews are out, the tech reviewers have tested and confirmed the large battery size.

iPhone 16e vs. iPhone 16 – Battery

According to tech reviewer Dave Lee, the iPhone 16e packs a 3,961mAh battery delivering big phone battery life in a smaller 6.1-inch device. In his review, he says, “the battery life of a big phone, a plus-product, a max-type product, except it’s a normal size phone with a 6.1-inch screen”.

image

image
iPhone 16e battery life comparison. (Source – Dave2D YouTube)

Dave Lee’s tests show it lasts 12 hours and 54 minutes in a Wi-Fi Reddit browsing test, outlasting the iPhone 16’s 11 hours and 17 minutes. When playing Pokémon Unite on LTE, the iPhone 16e lasted 3 hours and 39 minutes, compared to the iPhone 16’s 3 hours and 7 minutes. In a Netflix streaming test on LTE, the iPhone 16e lasted 19 hours and 17 minutes, while the iPhone 16 drained in 15 hours and 43 minutes.

iPhone 16 Series Battery Size –

  • iPhone 16e – 3,961mAh
  • iPhone 16 – 3,561 mAh
  • iPhone 16 Plus – 4,674 mAh
  • iPhone 16 Pro – 3,582 mAh
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max – 4,685 mAh

Engadget too praised the device, stating it “had no problem lasting well longer than 24 hours,” while MKBHD called it “a really good battery.”

iPhone 16e – What Reviewers Have To Say?

The iPhone 16e performs well in its price range, even though its GPU has one less core than the A18 chip found in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. However, CNET noted that benchmark tests reveal a noticeable gap in GPU performance, putting it on par with the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus.

CNET says, “In everyday use, the phone had no issues playing video games, editing and saving videos and using Apple Intelligence. In the benchmark test for the CPU, the iPhone 16E scored higher than the iPhone 16, iPhone 15 and iPhone SE.”

The C1 chip, Apple’s first in-house 5G modem, also received mixed feedback. Reviews say it “seems fine” and performs similarly to Qualcomm’s modems in other iPhone 16 models. Apple claims it uses less power, helping with battery life.

The Verge says, “Every time I thought the iPhone 16 was faring better with video call quality or upload speeds, I’d try the same test again and the 16E would come out ahead. If I were none the wiser, I wouldn’t have given the modem a second thought as I used the phone. Given the difficulty Apple seemingly encountered building this thing and the complexity of a cellular modem, “it seems fine” is actually a great outcome for the C1.”

Revealing a similar experience, the CNET reviewer also revealed, “I ran tests side by side with an iPhone 16 Pro Max that was also on AT&T using the Speed Test app by Ookla. […] And while the 16 Pro Max had faster download speeds, the 16E’s results were still good. In fact, its upload speeds beat the 16 Pro Max, which means selfies and videos post quickly to Instagram and TikTok, while video calls look and sound good without any freezes.”

The iPhone 16e has a single 48MP rear camera, the same resolution as the iPhone 16 but with a smaller sensor. MKBHD pointed out that this results in “way less shallow depth of field” and reduced sharpness in low-light conditions. This makes the phone rely more on Night Mode for darker scenes.

Despite the compromises, The Verge stated that “most people will be perfectly happy” with the iPhone 16e’s camera as it still takes good photos and videos in most cases.

While battery life and performance are strong points, the iPhone 16e has two notable drawbacks. The lack of MagSafe support could be disappointing for users upgrading from an iPhone 12 or newer, as it removes access to MagSafe accessories and faster wireless charging options.

Moreover, the phone sticks to older Qi wireless charging technology, which is slower and generates more heat compared to the MagSafe-supported iPhones.

FAQs

Q1. What is the battery capacity of the iPhone 16e compared to other iPhone 16 models?

Answer. According to tech reviewer Dave Lee, the iPhone 16e has a 3,961mAh battery. For comparison, the iPhone 16 has a 3,561mAh battery, the iPhone 16 Plus has a 4,674mAh battery, the iPhone 16 Pro has a 3,582mAh battery, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max has a 4,685mAh battery.

Q2. How long does the iPhone 16e last in various usage tests?

Answer. Tech reviewer Dave Lee’s tests revealed – In a Wi-Fi Reddit browsing test, the iPhone 16e lasted 12 hours and 54 minutes, outlasting the iPhone 16’s 11 hours and 17 minutes. It lasted 3 hours and 39 minutes playing Pokémon Unite on LTE, compared to the iPhone 16’s 3 hours and 7 minutes. During Netflix streaming on LTE, the iPhone 16e lasted 19 hours and 17 minutes, while the iPhone 16 drained in 15 hours and 43 minutes.

Q3. What are the performance capabilities of the iPhone 16e’s C1 chip?

Answer. The C1 chip uses less power contributing to better battery life and handles tasks like video calls and uploads efficiently.

Q4. What are the camera specifications of the iPhone 16e?

Answer. The iPhone 16e has a single 48MP rear camera, the same resolution as the iPhone 16 but with a smaller sensor. This results in reduced sharpness in low-light conditions and more reliance on Night Mode for darker scenes.

Q5. What are the notable drawbacks of the iPhone 16e?

Answer. The iPhone 16e lacks MagSafe support, which limits access to MagSafe accessories and faster wireless charging options. It also uses older Qi wireless charging technology, which is slower and generates more heat compared to MagSafe-supported iPhones.

It will feature a 6.78-inch flat OLED display with a 1.5K resolution. For security, it may include an ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint sensor.

On the camera front, the GT Pro is rumoured to come with a 50MP flagship-grade main sensor. Since Honor is optimising this device for gaming, the primary camera could be paired with a 12MP ultra-wide lens, similar to the standard Honor GT.

One of the biggest upgrades is the 6,000mAh battery, a jump from the 5,300mAh battery found in the standard GT model. The phone is also expected to support 100W fast charging, which means less downtime and more gaming.

The Honor GT Pro is expected to launch after the Honor 400 series, which is set to debut in May in China. Meanwhile, Honor is also rumoured to be working on two new foldables, the Magic V4 and Magic V2 Flip with the Magic V4 possibly launching in June.

With months to go before its official unveiling, more leaks and details about the Honor GT Pro are likely to emerge soon.

We recently reported on the leaked renders of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 revealing its key design elements. And now the first leaked renders of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 are here giving us a sneak peek at Samsung’s next flip-style foldable.

The leaked images shared by Android Headlines in an exclusive report are CAD-based renders, which means minor details could change before launch. However, the images provide a solid idea of what to expect in terms of design.

Previous leaks have already revealed that the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will measure 166.6 x 75.2 x 6.9 mm when unfolded and 9.1 mm thick with the camera bumps. This makes it slightly taller and much wider than the Flip6 while keeping the same thickness.

The increase in size is mainly to accommodate larger displays such as a 6.8-inch inner screen and a 3.6-inch outer screen.

The Flip 7 will still have a dual-camera setup featuring a 50MP main sensor and a 12MP ultrawide sensor. While the resolutions remain the same as the Flip6, there could be sensor upgrades for better image quality.

Under the hood, Samsung is reportedly considering the Exynos 2500 SoC, depending on production yields. If that doesn’t work out, it could use the Snapdragon 8 Elite, though it’s unclear whether it will be the seven-core version. The phone is expected to pack 12GB RAM with storage options of 256GB and 512 GB.

The Flip 7’s price is expected to remain the same as the Flip 6, which is good news for those worried about a price hike. However, it’s still disappointing that foldable prices haven’t dropped much over the years.

One big improvement is the crease will be less visible than on the Flip 6, which in itself is a long-standing complaint among foldable phone users.

Apple is rumoured to be increasing the RAM in the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max to 12GB for improving Apple Intelligence features. Apple Intelligence functions require at least 8GB RAM and with Apple pushing for more advanced capabilities, higher RAM could be necessary. Here’s what we know.

iPhone 17 Pro Series To Have More RAM for AI Features

Speculations about 12GB RAM in this year’s iPhones aren’t new and have been going on for a while. It was predicted by trusted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in August 2023, following Apple Intelligence’s announcement at WWDC 2024.

Now, another report is making this prediction gain some more traction.

In a report seen by 9to5Mac, analyst Jeff Pu of GFHK Tech Research confirmed that both iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max will have 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM, compared to 8GB in the current models. He explained that AI demands are pushing smartphone and PC makers to increase RAM capacity.

“Meanwhile iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are expected to migrate to LPDDR5 12GB, this transition alone will contribute to a 3.5% YoY increase in smartphone DRAM content across an estimated 100 million new iPhone units,” Pu reportedly stated.

Apple’s RAM Upgrades Over the Years

Apple first introduced 8GB RAM in the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max in 2023, while the non-Pro models had 6GB. Last year, Apple also bumped up the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus to 8GB RAM making them eligible for Apple Intelligence.

Even the recently announced iPhone 16e comes with 8GB RAM and AI support.

The increase to 12GB RAM in the iPhone 17 Pro models not only makes them more future-proof but also suggests that Apple is working on new AI features that could require even more power. This follows Apple’s move in 2023 when it upgraded all Macs including the older M2 MacBook Air to 16GB RAM.

iPhone 17 Series – What More to Expect?

While not much is known as of now, rumours suggest the iPhone 17 lineup will get major design changes including a new camera layout and video features tailored for vlogging. Apple is also reportedly working on an ultra-slim iPhone, which could replace the current Plus model sitting between the standard iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 series in September.

Q2. When was the prediction of 12GB RAM in iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max first made?

Answer. The prediction of 12GB RAM in iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max was first made by trusted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in August 2023, following Apple Intelligence’s announcement at WWDC 2024.

Oppo has just launched the Oppo A5 Pro internationally, but the global version comes with noticeable downgrades compared to the original model released in China in December 2024. Here’s what we know thanks to its listing on the Oppo e-store.

Oppo A5 Pro Global Version – What’s Different?

The biggest change between the China version of Oppo A5 Pro and what’s been launched internationally is the use of the older MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset in the global version instead of China’s Dimensity 7300. Other than that, both versions come with up to 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, which can be expanded to 1TB via microSD.

The display also isn’t the same as the China version. The global model features a 6.67-inch LCD screen with a lower 1604 x 720p resolution, compared to the Chinese variant’s 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED panel. However, it still supports a 120Hz refresh rate and 1000-nit peak brightness.

The camera setup remains unchanged. Both versions sport a 50MP main sensor, a 2MP depth sensor on the back and an 8MP front camera. The phone keeps its tough build with IP66/68/69 dust and water resistance, MIL-STD-810H military-grade durability and 360° drop protection.

One of the biggest downgrades is the battery, which has been reduced from 6,000mAh to 5,800mAh. However, Oppo keeps the same 45W wired fast charging.

Other features include a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, Bluetooth 5.3, WiFi 5, 5G+5G dual SIM dual standby and ColorOS 15.

The in-the-box contents include an Oppo A5 Pro mobile phone (including a screen protector), charger, quick guide, Type C data cable, SIM card pin, safety guide and protective case.

Oppo A5 Pro Global Version – Price & Availability

Similar to the version launched in China last year, Oppo A5 Pro Global comes in two colour options including Flower Pink and Mocha Brown.

In Taiwan, the A5 Pro starts at NT$7,990 (about $243) for the 6GB + 128GB model, while the 8GB + 256GB version costs NT$9,490 (around $290).
