Oppo has introduced the Reno13 FS, a new phone that’s essentially an upgraded version of the Reno13 F in Europe. The key differences are basically just more RAM, more storage and the rest you get is the same familiar design.

On the back, there’s a triple-camera setup consisting of a 50MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide lens and a 2MP macro sensor. One of the colour options includes an LED ring design around the camera island, but it’s purely for aesthetics, not a functional light.

Powering the device is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset paired with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. This is an upgrade over the Reno13 F, which was available in Europe only with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. If that’s still not enough, the phone supports expandable storage via a microSD card.

The Reno13 FS runs Android 15 with Oppo’s ColorOS 15 on top. It also supports dual nano-SIM cards and comes with NFC for contactless payments.

Google is reportedly planning to replace SMS-based authentication for Gmail with QR codes to improve security and tackle SMS-related fraud. A report by Forbes’ Davey Winder based on their discussions with Google insiders claims the SMS codes are being dropped.

SMS authentication has been widely used, but it has several security flaws. Gmail spokesperson Ross Richendrfer explained, “Just like we want to move past passwords with passkeys, we want to move away from sending SMS messages for authentication.”

“Over the next few months, we will be reimagining how we verify phone numbers,” Richendrfer told Forbes. “Specifically, instead of entering your number and receiving a 6-digit code, you’ll see a QR code being displayed, which you need to scan with the camera app on your phone,” they added.

Google’s Current Verification Method

Google currently uses SMS verification for two main reasons. One is security as SMSs are used to verify a user’s identity. The other reason is abuse control, which means SMS authentification is to prevent fraudulent Gmail account creation for spam and malware distribution.

However, SMS-based authentication comes with risks including phishing attacks, accessibility issues and carrier hacks. These are as explained below –

Phishing Attacks – Hackers can trick users into revealing their codes.
Device Accessibility Issues – Users may not always have access to the phone receiving the SMS.
Carrier Vulnerabilities – Cybercriminals can deceive mobile carriers into transferring phone numbers, bypassing SMS security.

To counter all the above-mentioned risks, Google seems to be planning to introduce QR code-based authentication in the coming months. Instead of receiving a 6-digit SMS code, users will scan a QR code with their phone’s camera.

This change offers two major benefits, which includes –

Better Phishing Protection – Without a fixed code, hackers have nothing to steal.
Less Dependence on Mobile Carriers – This eliminates the risk of SIM-based fraud.

Richendrfer noted, “SMS codes are a source of heightened risk for users. We’re introducing an innovative approach to shrink the attack surface and keep users safer.”

The Supreme Court today dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that sought regulation of internet prices. However, the court granted the petitioner the liberty to explore alternative legal remedies.

The case was heard by a bench led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar.

The petitioner Rajat had named the Department of Telecommunication (DoT), the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Reliance Jio, and Bharti Airtel as respondents in the petition.

During the hearing, the bench pointed out that consumers have multiple options for internet services. “It’s a free market and there is a local area network, you get wired internet, BSNL and MTNL are also giving you the internet,” the bench stated.

However, the petitioner argued that while alternatives exist, Reliance Jio dominates the market with an 80% share.

In response, the Chief Justice suggested that if the petitioner was alleging cartelization, the matter should be taken to the Competition Commission of India (CCI) instead. “No please, then go to the Competition Commission of India,” he remarked.

Dismissing the petition in order, the court ruled, “We are not inclined to entertain the present petition under Article 32 of the Constitution of India, petition is dismissed. We however clarify that in case the petitioner wants to take any recourse to appropriate statutory remedy he is at liberty to do so, we make no comments in this regard.”

If true, this would make the Z Fold 7 the largest-screen foldable in its category for now.
