Oppo has introduced the Reno13 FS, a new phone that’s essentially an upgraded version of the Reno13 F in Europe. The key differences are basically just more RAM, more storage and the rest you get is the same familiar design.

Here’s everything we know about the phone.

Oppo Reno13 FS – Display and Design

The Reno13 FS features a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with a 1080p resolution and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. The phone has an under-display optical fingerprint scanner and a 32MP selfie camera housed in a punch-hole cutout.

On the back, there’s a triple-camera setup consisting of a 50MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide lens and a 2MP macro sensor. One of the colour options includes an LED ring design around the camera island, but it’s purely for aesthetics, not a functional light.

The Reno13 FS runs Android 15 with Oppo’s ColorOS 15 on top. It also supports dual nano-SIM cards and comes with NFC for contactless payments.

Keeping things running is a 5,800mAh battery, which should provide solid battery life.

Google May Replace SMS Authentication for Gmail With QR Codes

0

Highlights

  • Google plans to replace SMS-based authentication for Gmail with QR codes.
  • The aim is to improve security and tackle SMS-related fraud as revealed by a Forbes report.
  • SMS authentication has several risks including phishing attacks, device accessibility issues and carrier vulnerabilities.
  • QR codes are expected to offer better phishing protection and less dependence on mobile carriers.

Google is reportedly planning to replace SMS-based authentication for Gmail with QR codes to improve security and tackle SMS-related fraud. A report by Forbes’ Davey Winder based on their discussions with Google insiders claims the SMS codes are being dropped.

SMS authentication has been widely used, but it has several security flaws. Gmail spokesperson Ross Richendrfer explained, “Just like we want to move past passwords with passkeys, we want to move away from sending SMS messages for authentication.”

“Over the next few months, we will be reimagining how we verify phone numbers,” Richendrfer told Forbes. “Specifically, instead of entering your number and receiving a 6-digit code, you’ll see a QR code being displayed, which you need to scan with the camera app on your phone,” they added.

Google’s Current Verification Method

Google currently uses SMS verification for two main reasons. One is security as SMSs are used to verify a user’s identity. The other reason is abuse control, which means SMS authentification is to prevent fraudulent Gmail account creation for spam and malware distribution.

However, SMS-based authentication comes with risks including phishing attacks, accessibility issues and carrier hacks. These are as explained below –

  • Phishing Attacks – Hackers can trick users into revealing their codes.
  • Device Accessibility Issues – Users may not always have access to the phone receiving the SMS.
  • Carrier Vulnerabilities – Cybercriminals can deceive mobile carriers into transferring phone numbers, bypassing SMS security.

Another rising threat is traffic pumping also called toll fraud. It is when scammers trick services into sending massive amounts of SMS messages to numbers they control profiting from each message.

Google To Use QR Codes as the New Authentication Method

To counter all the above-mentioned risks, Google seems to be planning to introduce QR code-based authentication in the coming months. Instead of receiving a 6-digit SMS code, users will scan a QR code with their phone’s camera.

This change offers two major benefits, which includes –

  • Better Phishing Protection – Without a fixed code, hackers have nothing to steal.
  • Less Dependence on Mobile Carriers – This eliminates the risk of SIM-based fraud.

Richendrfer noted, “SMS codes are a source of heightened risk for users. We’re introducing an innovative approach to shrink the attack surface and keep users safer.”

Google hasn’t given an exact launch date for this update, but more details are expected soon. FoneArena report notes that this change in authentication method aligns with Google’s broader move toward more secure authentication methods such as passkeys and biometrics.

FAQs

Q1. What authentication method is Google planning to replace for Gmail?

Answer. Google is planning to replace SMS-based authentication for Gmail with QR codes to improve security and tackle SMS-related fraud.

Q2. What are the security flaws associated with SMS-based authentication?

Answer. SMS authentication has risks including phishing attacks, device accessibility issues and carrier vulnerabilities such as SIM-based fraud.

Q3. How will QR codes benefit Gmail authentication?

Answer. QR codes offer better phishing protection and reduce dependence on mobile carriers, eliminating the risk of SIM-based fraud.

Q4. Has Google provided a launch date for the QR code-based authentication update?

Answer. No, Google hasn’t given an exact launch date for the QR code-based authentication update but more details are expected soon.

Dismissing the petition in order, the court ruled, “We are not inclined to entertain the present petition under Article 32 of the Constitution of India, petition is dismissed. Samsung has been a leader in the foldable smartphone space, but 2025 is shaping up to be a challenging year as competition pushes design limits. To stay ahead, Samsung seems to be making some major changes to its foldable lineup and new renders of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 give us an exciting first look.

The renders shared by OnLeaks and Android Headlines aren’t official but are based on hardware measurements used by phone case manufacturers. While there’s some room for interpretation, they still offer a reliable glimpse at what’s coming

One of the biggest rumoured changes is a much thinner design. Reports suggest that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be just 9.5mm thick when closed including the camera bump, while it could be only 4.5mm thick when unfolded. The inner screen is said to expand to 8.2 inches, while the outer display could be 6.5 inches. The device might measure 58.4 x 143.1 x 4.5mm when open suggesting a new aspect ratio.

If true, this would make the Z Fold 7 the largest-screen foldable in its category for now.

The Fold 7 is expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, the same chip used in the Galaxy S25 series, rather than Samsung’s Exynos processors.

The battery capacity is expected to remain unchanged, and while the camera setup may be similar to the Fold 6, rumours suggest a 200MP primary sensor could be in the works.

Samsung’s First Tri-Fold Smartphone?

In addition to the Fold 7 and Flip 7, Samsung is also rumoured to launch a tri-fold smartphone alongside them. Unlike Huawei’s Z-shaped foldable, Samsung’s version could have a G-shaped fold, which means the inner display stays protected when closed.

According to a Korean news report, multiple industry sources said, “The double-folding multi-fold phone is being developed and produced simultaneously with the Z series,” and “It seems that they will be released at the same time.”

Here’s what we know so far about the tri-fold device –

  • Unfolded screen size – 9.96 inches
  • Cover screen size – 6.49 inches
  • Production starts in April with mass production expected soon after
  • Only 200,000 units are expected and the launch might be limited to specific regions

If Samsung sticks to its usual schedule, all three devices including the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Flip 7 and tri-fold smartphone could be launched in July 2025.
