Apple’s next-gen M5 chips expected to prioritise AI performance in next-generating Apple devices are now in mass production. According to a report by the Korean news website ETNews, the company’s manufacturing partners have started packaging the new chips, a process that involves wiring up the silicon and enclosing it in a protective case.

Reports suggest the M5 chip will be used for 2025 models of MacBook Pro, iPad Pro and Vision Pro.

The ET report says, “Apple has started mass production of the next-generation semiconductor chip ‘M5’. It is a semiconductor installed in Apple’s core products such as the Mac series and iPad. It is understood that Apple has introduced new process technology to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) performance.”

The M5 chips are built on TSMC’s advanced 3nm (N3P) process and are expected to deliver a 5% boost in performance with up to 10% better power efficiency. But the real focus this time is AI with Apple likely upgrading the Neural Processing Unit (NPU). For example, the M4’s Neural Engine reached 38 TOPS, which is more than double the 18 TOPS of the M3.

One of the most exciting developments is the introduction of System-on-Integrated-Chips-molding-Horizontal (SoIC-mH) technology in some M5 models. This allows chips to be stacked using copper connectors improving heat dissipation and boosting performance.

Apple is also tweaking how these chips are mounted on the motherboard refining the adhesive layer to support better stacking, similar to how smartphone RAM sits directly on top of the chipset.

Production is being handled by multiple companies including the ASE (Taiwan) is leading the initial mass production, while Amkor (US) and JCET (China) will join in later batches.

The first standard variant of the M5 chip is expected to debut in the new iPad Pro lineup in the second half of this year. Apple also has M5 Pro, Max and Ultra versions in the works. Notably, the M5 Pro will be the first to feature the SoIC-mH stacking method.

There hasn’t been an Ultra chip since the M2 series, which powered the Mac Pro and Mac Studio. Neither of those machines has seen an upgrade since then, and analysts believe the M5 Ultra might not arrive until 2026. This suggests we won’t see new Mac Pro or Mac Studio models this year.

FAQs

Q1. Which Apple devices will feature the M5 chip?

Answer. The M5 chip will be used in the 2025 models of MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Vision Pro.

Q2. What advancements are included in the M5 chip?

Answer. The M5 chips are built on TSMC’s 3nm process and feature System-on-Integrated-Chips-molding-Horizontal (SoIC-mH) technology, which improves heat dissipation and performance.

Q3. Who is handling the mass production of the M5 chip?

Answer. Initial mass production is led by ASE (Taiwan), with Amkor (US) and JCET (China) joining later batches.

Highlights

  • Security researchers found malware in iPhone apps that can scan users’ screenshots using Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
  • Several affected apps targeting users in Asia and Europe were found in Apple’s App Store.
  • Some of these apps are reportedly still available for download raising concerns about Apple’s app review process.

Apple App Store is supposed to be a safe space with every app going through a strict review process. However, it is often reported that malicious apps still somehow manage to slip through. Security researchers at Kaspersky have now found malware inside iPhone apps that can scan users’ screenshots for sensitive information, marking what they call “the first known case” of its kind.

Researchers Dmitry Kalinin and Sergey Puzan discovered screenshot-reading malware hidden in both iOS and Android apps. On iPhones, these apps use Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to scan images in a user’s photo library, specifically looking for crypto wallet recovery phrases.

According to Kaspersky, this is the first known instance of OCR spyware making its way into Apple’s App Store. It reads, “This is the first known case of an app infected with OCR spyware being found in Apple’s official app marketplace.”

The report explains, “The Android malware module would decrypt and launch an OCR plug-in built with Google’s ML Kit library, and use that to recognise text it found in images inside the gallery. Images that matched keywords received from the C2 were sent to the server. The iOS-specific malicious module had a similar design and also relied on Google’s ML Kit library for OCR.

The report lists several affected apps mainly targeting users in Asia and Europe. Some of these apps may have been compromised without their developers knowing, while others could be intentionally malicious.

“We detected a series of apps embedded with a malicious framework in the App Store. We cannot confirm with certainty whether the infection was a result of a supply chain attack or deliberate action by the developers. Some of the apps, such as food delivery services, appeared to be legitimate, whereas others apparently had been built to lure victims. For example, we saw several similar AI-featured “messaging apps” by the same developer,” the report highlights.

Surprisingly, some of these apps are still available for download on the App Store. As The Verge points out, these include:

  • ComeCome (a food delivery app)
  • AnyGPT (an AI chat app)
  • WeTink (another AI chat app)

This discovery raises concerns about Apple’s app review process and how well it can catch advanced malware techniques.

FAQs

Q1. What type of malware was found in iPhone apps?

Answer. Security researchers found malware inside iPhone apps that can scan users’ screenshots for sensitive information using Optical Character Recognition (OCR).

Q2. Which specific apps with malware were still available for download on the App Store?

Answer. The affected apps still available for download on the App Store include ComeCome (a food delivery app), AnyGPT (an AI chat app) and WeTink (another AI chat app).

Q3. What does the malware specifically look for in users’ screenshots?

Answer. The malware scans images in a user’s photo library, specifically looking for crypto wallet recovery phrases.

Vivo X200 Ultra Camera Specs Leak Again

0

Highlights

  • The Vivo X200 Ultra leak reveals a 50 MP main camera, 50 MP ultra-wide camera and 200 MP periscope telephoto camera.
  • Prototypes show unusual camera arrangements with the ultrawide camera at 1x and the main camera at 1.5x.
  • The phone is expected to launch in March or April and will only be sold in China.

The Vivo X200 Ultra is shaping up to be the brand’s ultimate camera flagship for 2025, set to rival the Xiaomi 15 Ultra and Oppo Find X8 Ultra. A new leak from Digital Chat Station, posted on Weibo and later deleted, has revealed fresh details about its camera system.

The X200 Ultra is expected to feature:

  • 50 MP main camera (1/1.28″ sensor)
  • 50 MP ultrawide camera (1/1.28″ sensor)
  • 200 MP periscope telephoto camera (1/1.4″ sensor)

Meanwhile, prototypes reportedly show the ultrawide camera at 1x in the viewfinder, while the main camera is at 1.5x. This is unusual since we’re all used to the main camera being at 1x and the ultrawide being around 0.5x or 0.6x.

As pointed out in the GSMArena report, if Apple did something like this, it would likely become a trend across Android phones, but since it’s vivo, we’ll have to wait and see if it actually sticks. It’s also possible that vivo is just labelling the cameras differently.

Beyond the cameras, the X200 Ultra is said to have a 6.8-inch “2K” LTPO OLED screen with slight curves on all sides, extremely slim bezels, and a circular camera island.

Interestingly, Digital Chat Station deleted his original post replacing it with just the word “early.” This could mean the leak was premature or the details might still change. However, he did claim to have personally handled an X200 Ultra prototype, so it’s unclear why the information would be inaccurate.

While the Vivo X200 Ultra is expected to launch in March or April, it unfortunately won’t be officially sold outside of China.

FAQs

Q1. What are the main camera specs of the Vivo X200 Ultra?

Answer. The Vivo X200 Ultra is expected to feature a 50 MP main camera (1/1.28″ sensor), a 50 MP ultrawide camera (1/1.28″ sensor) and a 200 MP periscope telephoto camera (1/1.4″ sensor).

Q2. What is unusual about the camera arrangement in the Vivo X200 Ultra prototypes?

Answer. Prototypes reportedly show the ultrawide camera at 1x in the viewfinder, while the main camera is at 1.5x, which is unusual since the main camera is typically at 1x and the ultrawide around 0.5x or 0.6x.

Q3. What are the display specifications of the Vivo X200 Ultra?

Answer. The Vivo X200 Ultra is said to have a 6.8-inch “2K” LTPO OLED screen with slight curves on all sides and extremely slim bezels.

Q4. Will the Vivo X200 Ultra be available outside of China?

Answer. Unfortunately, the Vivo X200 Ultra will not be officially sold outside of China.

Netflix has been making changes to its gaming lineup adjusting its library of free-to-play games for subscribers. As part of these shifts, the company has cancelled six previously announced games that were set to launch on iOS and Android through its platform.

According to a report published on What’s On Netflix, the cancelled titles include Thirsty Suitors, Compass Point: West, Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game, Don’t Starve Together, Lab Rat and Rotwood. The last three were being developed by Klei Entertainment.

Netflix confirmed the decision to Engadget explaining that removing these titles was “just a natural part of adjusting our portfolio as we learn more about what our members like.”

While Netflix has dropped Tales of the Shire from its lineup, the game is still set to launch next month on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Similarly, Thirsty Suitors, an action RPG that received positive reviews upon its 2023 release on PC and consoles, will remain available outside Netflix. Meanwhile, Don’t Starve Together was an expansion of the 2013 survival hit Don’t Starve.

Netflix’s Gaming Service Strategy

Netflix has been revamping its gaming division since bringing in a new leader last year. The company has already removed several games from its catalogue and in October, it shut down its AAA game studio Team Blue.

Meanwhile, former Netflix executive Leanne Loombe, who helped bring Hades and Grand Theft Auto to the platform, has since left to lead Annapurna Interactive.

Despite these cancellations, Netflix is still expanding its gaming catalogue. The WWE 2K series is set to arrive later this year, and the company is focusing on Big-name franchises, Narrative-driven games Party and couch co-op titles and Games for kids.

Netflix Defends Split-Season Releases, Calls It a ‘Creator-Driven’ Choice

Netflix has long been known for its binge-watch model, where full seasons drop all at once. But in recent years, the company has been splitting seasons of some of its biggest shows and now Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria has explained why during an interview with Deadline.

According to Bajaria, the trend began due to COVID and industry strikes allowing Netflix to release shows sooner rather than making audiences wait longer. But beyond that, she says creators themselves prefer it in some cases.

“Some of those have been for reasons because it was during Covid and strikes to get the shows on so audiences don’t have to wait for a long time,” Bajaria told Deadline. “A lot of times it’s been creator-driven. Peter Morgan on The Crown, Shonda Rhimes on Bridgerton, there was a way that they wanted to structure or write it because they felt it was an actual, natural emotional break. So there’s no set way, it depends on what’s best for the show,” she added.

Shows like Stranger Things, The Crown, Bridgerton and Emily in Paris have all had split-season releases. However, the Deadline report points out that “Netflix has not used the half-season drop model in several months, with three of the streamer’s biggest shows, Squid Game, The Night Agent and Virgin River, all getting new instalments put out as a season binge.”

When asked about the “mixed results” of the split-season approach such as viewer dissatisfaction or losing audience interest between Part 1 and Part 2, Bajaria disagreed and said, “I’m not sure it was mixed results.”

Netflix hasn’t shared detailed data on how successful the split-season model has been. However, the fact that it keeps using this strategy suggests it works for the company.

Splitting seasons has a business advantage for Netflix as it keeps subscribers around longer and builds hype for both halves of a season, all while maintaining its binge-drop identity.
