MediaTek today announced a partnership with NVIDIA to deliver a complete range of in-vehicle AI cabin solutions for the next generation of software-defined vehicles. The collaboration combines the strength of each company’s automotive portfolios to deliver the most compelling solutions for state-of-the-art connected cars.

“NVIDIA is a world-renowned pioneer and industry leader in AI and computing. With this partnership, our collaborative vision is to provide a global one-stop shop for the automotive industry, designing the next generation of intelligent, always-connected vehicles,” said Rick Tsai, Vice Chairman and CEO of MediaTek. “Through this special collaboration with NVIDIA, we will together be able to offer a truly unique platform for the compute intensive, software-defined vehicle of the future.”

“AI and accelerated computing are fueling the transformation of the entire auto industry,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “The combination of MediaTek’s industry-leading SoC and NVIDIA’s GPU and AI software technologies will enable new user experiences, enhanced safety and new connected services for all vehicle segments, from luxury to mainstream.”

Through this collaboration, MediaTek will develop automotive SoCs integrating a new NVIDIA GPU chipset with NVIDIA AI and graphics IP. Chiplets are connected by an ultra-fast and coherent chiplet interconnect technology. MediaTek’s smart cabin solutions will run NVIDIA DRIVE OS, DRIVE IX, CUDA and TensorRT software technologies — delivering a full range of AI cabin and cockpit functions with cutting-edge graphics, AI, safety and security features.

MediaTek will work with NVIDIA to deliver automotive solutions that surpass the industry’s growing needs and demands while posing a significant market opportunity for the companies. According to Gartner®, the total addressable market for infotainment and instrument cluster SoCs used within vehicles will reach $12 billion in 2023.

By tapping NVIDIA’s core expertise in AI, cloud, graphics technology and software, and pairing with NVIDIA ADAS solutions, MediaTek can bolster the capabilities of its comprehensive Dimensity Auto platform, which leverages the company’s expertise in mobile computing, high-speed connectivity, entertainment and extensive Android ecosystem, to deliver an all-around smarter in-vehicle experience.

Taiwan-based semiconductor company MediaTek and graphics technology giant NVIDIA have joined forces for a new business venture, debunking earlier rumors of a mobile system-on-chip (SoC) collaboration. Instead, the companies announced at Computex 2023 that their partnership will focus on integrating new GPU designs and associated technologies into automotive chipsets.

The announcement came during a press conference at Computex, featuring MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai and NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang. Huang expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating that the combination of MediaTek’s industry-leading chipsets and NVIDIA’s GPUs and AI software technologies will revolutionize user experiences across various automobile categories, spanning from affordable to luxury cars.

Huang emphasized the transformative role of AI and accelerated computing in the automotive industry, stating, “The combination of MediaTek’s industry-leading system-on-chip plus NVIDIA’s GPU and AI software technologies will enable new user experiences, enhanced safety, and new connected services for all vehicle segments, from luxury to entry-level.”

While specific details regarding the chipset model and specifications were not disclosed in the press release, it was confirmed that the new chipsets will be part of MediaTek’s Dimensity Auto range. The key change will be the integration of NVIDIA’s DRIVE OS, along with software technologies like DRIVE IX, CUDA, and TensorRT, into the infotainment systems of these vehicles.

The collaboration aims to enhance both the in-cabin experience and the safety functions of vehicles. By making the NVIDIA DRIVE platform available to car manufacturers, more advanced infotainment options will be accessible, enabling the integration of cutting-edge technologies into automotive systems.

Leveraging MediaTek’s expertise from their Dimensity lineup of chipsets used in Android devices, Dimensity Auto introduces new features like Cockpit, which supports smart multi-displays, high-dynamic range cameras, and audio processing.

While this partnership primarily focuses on automotive chipsets, the prospect of developing a high-end smartphone chipset with a new GPU design remains a potential future endeavor.

The collaboration between MediaTek and NVIDIA signals a significant step forward in the integration of advanced graphics and AI technologies within the automotive industry, promising to deliver enhanced user experiences, improved safety features, and connectivity services across a wide range of vehicles.
