Meta introduced its first pair of true augmented reality (AR) glasses – Orion, at Meta Connect 2024. When we say first true augmented reality glasses, we mean it is different from anything Meta has already shown us in the smart glasses category.

The glasses are lightweight and perfect for indoor or outdoor use, promising seamless connectivity .

In a surprise announcement, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed Orion and demonstrated the new device in detail.

Meta believed it would eventually become its “first consumer full holographic AR glasses.” However, these won’t be arriving on shelves anytime soon

“This is the physical world with holograms overlaid on it,” Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said after pulling out the chunky black glasses from a metal case dramatically brought to him on stage.

“For now, I think the right way to look at Orion is as a time machine,” he said. “These glasses exist, they are awesome and they are a glimpse of a future that I think is going to be pretty exciting.”

Paolo Pescatore, an analyst at PP Foresight, said there was no doubt of Meta’s aspiration to make virtual- and augmented-reality products as mass-market and affordable as possible. But he added that users were “still wary of AI” and needed some convincing.

Unlike the previous smart glasses we have already seen, Meta integrates Orion with advanced AR features. It blends the real world with digital content through sensors, spatial mapping, and a see-through display. It also overlays information into the user’s environment.

Meta during the introduction described Orion as a major step toward the future of spatial computing and the metaverse.

With Orion, users will be able to interact with both their physical surroundings and virtual elements in a hands-free. It promises a much more immersive experience than any previous augmented reality glasses.

Users can place large holographic 2D and 3D content anywhere in their space. Moreover, these smart AI glasses can understand the environment and also anticipate user needs. This helps in creating a seamless experience between the user and the augmented reality he or she wants to explore.

“What makes Orion unique is that it is unmistakably a pair of glasses in both look and feel – complete with transparent lenses.”

Meta claims the glasses are lightweight and versatile. They are designed to be suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

The input system of Orion includes voice commands, eye tracking, and hand gestures. When the whole system with these gestures works together, they enable the users to stay present and connected with those around them.

According to Meta, “Orion has the largest field of view in the smallest AR glasses form to date. That field of view unlocks truly immersive use cases for Orion, from multitasking windows and big-screen entertainment to life-size holograms of people – all digital content that can seamlessly blend with your view of the physical world.”

Meta’s smart assistant Meta AI is also integrated into the glasses. These help in recognising real-world objects and offering helpful visualisations.

For example, it can suggest recipes based on what’s stored in your refrigerator. Users will also be able to make video calls and manage other tasks such as updating their digital calendar while multitasking with these glasses.

Orion is not yet available to the public.

Orion isn’t just a window into the future – it’s a look at the very real possibilities within reach today.

However, Meta seems to be excited about its potential. Industry experts too have commented on the newly introduced glasses with predictions that it is capable of changing how we connect and interact with our surroundings.

However, Meta has maintained that more research and refinement are needed. So, it will be a while before these glasses will be ready for commercial release.
