In a big move towards digital convenience and privacy, the Indian government has launched a new Aadhaar app that lets users digitally verify and share their Aadhaar details, so no more carrying around physical cards or submitting photocopies.

The app was launched by Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, in New Delhi. Talking about the launch, the minister called it a step towards making Aadhaar verification “easier, faster, and more secure.”

In a video shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Vaishnaw said, “New Aadhaar App, Face ID authentication via mobile app. No physical card, no photocopies.”

Key Features of the New Aadhaar App

  • Face ID authentication for added security and a smoother verification process.
  • Users can scan a QR code to verify their Aadhaar, just like how you make a UPI payment.
  • You can share only the necessary Aadhaar details digitally and only with your consent.

Vaishnaw explained, “Now with just a tap, users can share only the necessary data, giving them complete control over their personal information.”

He added, “Aadhaar verification becomes as simple as making a UPI payment. Users can now digitally verify and share their Aadhaar details while ensuring their privacy.”

With this new system, there’s no need to hand over printed Aadhaar copies at hotels, shops, airports, or anywhere else you need to verify your identity.

The app, currently in beta testing, has been built with privacy and security in mind. Aadhaar details shared through it can’t be edited, forged, or misused. Everything is done securely and only when you allow it.

Calling Aadhaar the “aadhaar” (foundation) of many government initiatives, the minister also talked about the importance of AI and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in India’s digital journey.

He encouraged stakeholders to share ideas on using AI with DPI to boost innovation while always keeping privacy at the core.
