However, it appears we are finally getting some solid updates on a possible launch timeline and some sneak peek at what exactly Apple has in stores. In his recent newsletter, Bloomberg’s Apple reporter Mark Gurman touched upon the topic of Apple’s plans for AirTag 2. According to Gurman, Apple is gearing up for a possible AirTag 2 launch sometime halfway into 2025. Gurman also revealed that while Apple might not make any drastic changes to the core design of the AirTag, we can expect some upgrades in the upcoming model. The upcoming AirTag 2 is codenamed B589 and has reportedly “progressed in manufacturing tests.” The three upgrades Gurman highlighted in his newsletter include better range, improved wireless chip and improved privacy. Some reports previously predicted that the next-gen AirTags will have better range and a wireless chip. However, Apple focusing on privacy for AirTags is a new reveal. The enhanced privacy feature in AirTag 2 will “include making it more difficult for someone to remove the speaker from the AirTag.” It is a welcome step that Apple is paying more attention to privacy for AirTags users considering there have been incidents of stalking via AirTags. Apple could be working to address such privacy concerns with the new model. Highlighting how enhanced privacy on AirTags would be a good thing, Gurman stated, “Since the device launched in 2021, some people have unfortunately used the product as a tool for stalking — and removing the speaker makes it less likely for someone to discover a hidden AirTag. Apple is contending with lawsuits over the device, and it’s in everyone’s interest to make the new model more tamper-proof.” The first AirTag was launched in 2021 after rumours around it had a free run for more than 2 years. The rumours started back in 2019 when iOS 13 references were leaked and a product with the B389 codename was discovered online.
