According to a report by The Washington Post, these security flaws had been used to hack iPhones in Russia. Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky had flagged off the security flaws and Apple has thanked them for pointing it out. Kaspersky had pointed out that “the malicious code installed after infection had 24 commands, including extracting passwords from Apple’s Keychain, monitoring locations, and modifying or exporting files,” as per The Washington Post report. In its release notes, Apple said that “an app may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited against versions of iOS released before iOS 15.7.” The second security flaw is related to the Webkit and Apple noted “Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.” The update is available for iPhone 8 and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 5th generation and later. As for the overall update, the release notes note that “this update provides important security fixes and is recommended for all users. It also fixes an issue that prevents charging with the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter.” Apple is rolling out the iOS 16.5.1 update to iPhone users worldwide, less than a couple of months after iOS 16.5 came out. Notably, iOS 16.5 broke the charging support for lightning to USB 3 camera adapter, which the latest update fixes.
