Alongside the OTT platforms, 19 websites, 10 applications, and 57 social media accounts linked to these services have also been restricted from public access across the country. Legal Grounds for the Ban The Government of India has banned 18 OTT platforms for publishing and distributing vulgar, obscene, and adult-rated media. These include Sections 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. Concerns Over Content Many apps had over 50 lakh downloads on the Google Play Store, with one particular app having over one crore downloads. The Ministry elaborated on its concerns, highlighting that a substantial portion of the content on these platforms was not only offensive but also portrayed women in a degrading manner. This included depictions of nudity, sexual acts in inappropriate contexts such as teacher-student relationships, incestuous family dynamics, and other themes that lack thematic or societal relevance.
