While the new updates are supposedly going to bring about new functionality to the Apple devices, a new report claims that there are some iPhones and iPads, which will not be fortunate enough to receive the latest updates. Let's take a look at the list of iPhones and iPads that might not receive the upcoming iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 updates. Blame it on an unpatchable vulnerability Joe Rossignol, MacRumors: iPhones and iPads equipped with the A5 through A11 chip are affected by a bootrom security vulnerability that Apple cannot patch on these devices, as the bootrom operates in a read-only state. The exploit has allowed for these devices to be perpetually jailbroken on a wide range of iOS versions, allowing users to modify the iOS file system. iOS 17 and iPadOS 17: supposed list of eligible (and ineligible) Devices According to a new report by Mac Rumours, Apple might provide the latest iOS 17 update to two generations of iPhones which received the iOS 16 update. This necessarily means that the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the iPhone X will not make it to the list and won’t receive the latest update. This also means that the devices launched after the said iPhones will be eligible for the iOS 17 update. If you are using the first-generation iPad Pro 9.7-inch, iPad Pro 12.9-inch, or the iPad (fifth generation), chances are that your device won’t be receiving the latest iPadOS 17 update. iOS 17 Devices Rumors The rumor comes from an anonymus user on Twitter who has accurately reported details about Apple software updates in the past. According to this user, iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will drop support for the following devices: * iPhone 8 * iPhone 8 Plus * iPhone X * iPad (5th generation) * 9.7-inch iPad Pro (1st generation) * 12.9-inch iPad Pro (1st generation) This comes after iOS 16 last year also dropped support for a number of devices, including the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the iPhone SE (1st generation), and the iPod touch (7th generation). As pointed out by MacRumours, Apples decision to drop these devices with iOS 17 could be related to an unpatchable bootrom vulnerability that affects the A5 through A11 chips. Additionally, Apple will continue to roll out security fixes for iOS 16 even after iOS 17 has been released. iOS 15 has received multiple updates this year to patch major security vulnerabilities. One more thing to consider, however, is that Apple oftentimes restricts some of the features in a new iOS release to its newest devices.
