Apple fans and tech experts have often said that Apple is running behind in the AI development area. But now in a recent interview with Editor Steven Levy for Wired, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed how Apple began exploring artificial intelligence as early as 2017 at the same time when Apple Park opened.

During the interview, Cook also shared some key insights into the company’s journey with AI and what to expect in future.

Pointing out that AI has been part of Apple’s long-term vision, Cook was quoted, “I wouldn’t say there was an aha moment.

Speaking to Steven Levy, he added, “It built like a wave, or like rolling thunder. Back in 2017 we built a neural engine into our products. It was already apparent that AI and machine learning were huge. It became obvious that we had to divert lots of people to it, that it would be a new era for our products.”

When asked how they figure out what to do with the tech, “We wanted to innovate in such a way that things would be personal and private. We began to think about the intersection of those things in a way that was classic Apple—how do you deliver this technology so that it benefits people and enhances their lives?”

Apple’s approach to AI is centred around personalisation and privacy. Cook explained during the interview that the company aims to make its AI tools deeply personal while safeguarding user data. He revealed there was no debate about charging for AI tools and that Apple remains committed to privacy by prioritising on-device AI processing.

In 2018, Apple took a major step by hiring John Giannandrea, who was previously Google’s former head of AI. Giannandrea has since emphasised how machine learning has become integral to Apple’s ecosystem.

Apple officially unveiled its AI strategy by 2024 under the name Apple Intelligence, announcing the initiative at WWDC.

Following its launch, Apple Intelligence debuted in iOS 18.1 with more features promised in the upcoming iOS 18.2. These advancements are expected to continue rolling out at least through 2025.
