This update aims to make chats easier to identify for contacts with similar names or for group chats that haven’t set custom icons.
According to PhoneArena, these themed icons are part of a broader design revamp. WhatsApp has been testing a customisable theme feature that will allow users to tweak the app’s primary colour.
Options include a black theme for light mode and a white accent for dark mode. The addition of colourful icons complements this effort.
Themed icons are also expected to help users differentiate between multiple group chats or communities with identical names, saving time and reducing confusion. These will look like the colour-coded contacts in your phone’s address book.
The feature is reportedly under development and will be rolled out in future updates.
