Everyone knows Xiaomi’s expansive product portfolio that extends well beyond smartphones to include gadgets like air purifiers and even mousepads.

While a fair few products are visible to the Indian audience, Xiaomi is even more aggressive in its home market of China.

As such the company is now steering into the automotive lane with the introduction of its first electric vehicle, the Xiaomi SU7, and its advanced counterpart, the SU7 Max.

CEO Lei Jun pivots towards electric vehicles, eyeing automotive innovation

“Xiaomi SU7 is undergoing extensive road testing across China, and we’re finalizing preparations for its launch,” Lei Jun stated on Weibo. “To dedicate more attention to the automobile business, I’ve delegated the general management of the Xiaomi brand to Liu Weibing.

Currently, he is the President of the Group. He will also be the presenter at future Xiaomi conferences focused on smartphones, starting with the Xiaomi Mi 14 Ultra.”

This shift emphasizes the company’s commitment to its EV aspirations. Despite this strategic move, Lei Jun reassured stakeholders. “Rest assured, the mobile phone business remains Xiaomi’s core, and I will continue to invest significant energy in it.”

Lei Jun’s recent announcement on Weibo

Under the leadership of CEO Lei Jun, Xiaomi is making a bold pivot toward the burgeoning EV market.

Lei Jun’s recent announcement on Weibo is more-or-less a strategic shift in his professional focus toward automotive innovation, signalling Xiaomi’s ambitious drive into the electric vehicle sphere.

However, Xiaomi will not be abandoning its smartphone ventures at all.

Lei Jun’s move is more about diversification and the company will continue producing its array of electronics and smart devices, but with a refreshed leadership structure to accommodate this new direction.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun about Xiaomi Goals

William Lu steps in as the new general manager of Xiaomi, taking the helm to guide the company’s product ecosystem, while Wang Teng takes charge of the Redmi brand, ensuring the continuity of Xiaomi’s legacy in the smartphone industry.

Lei Jun’s decision to delegate his usual role at product launches to William Lu, starting with the Xiaomi 14 Ultra event, hints at his commitment to Xiaomi’s automotive ambitions.

This transition might mean Lei Jun will be less visible in the smartphone spotlight, but it reflects his belief in the electric vehicle sector’s potential.

Xiaomi’s EV move aims to carve a significant niche in the global automotive market

From a broader perspective, Xiaomi’s foray into electric vehicles with the SU7 series is not just a new business venture but a glimpse into the future Lei Jun envisions for the company.

Given Xiaomi’s impressive climb to become Asia’s third-largest phone manufacturer, this move into the EV market could position Xiaomi as a formidable player in the automotive world.

Only time will tell how Xiaomi’s journey into electric vehicles will unfold, but the path seems set for an exciting ride.
