Thousands of users were unable to access X (formerly Twitter) on Monday morning, with outages reported across the U.S. After nearly eight hours of disruption, Elon Musk claimed that the platform was under a “massive cyberattack.” Here’s what we know so far.

Musk’s Statement on the Outage

“There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against 𝕏. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing …,” Musk wrote on X.

In a live Fox News interview on Monday, Musk also claimed that the attack appeared to originate from IP addresses in the Ukraine area. However, there is no concrete evidence yet to support his claims beyond his statements.

Musk has been more prominent since the start of President Donald Trump’s second administration. His leadership has been marked by abrupt budget cuts to government funding, job programs and international aid. His growing influence has also sparked protests at Tesla stores, with Tesla’s stock taking a hit as well.

Given Musk’s high-profile status, it wouldn’t be surprising if X was targeted by cyberattacks. However, without further verification, his claim remains unconfirmed.

How The X Outage Unfolded?

According to Downdetector, which tracks website outages, X first went down for some users at 5:30 a.m. ET, with over 20,000 reports of issues. While service was partially restored after an hour, a second wave of outages hit around 9:30 a.m. ET, with over 40,000 reports of users unable to access the platform.

Some users were able to log in intermittently, but problems persisted until 1:30 p.m. ET.

For a platform of this size, occasional outages are common, but they’re never convenient. One frustrated user on Downdetector summed it up best, “On day 1 of the NFL free agency!? ELON Fix this.”
