HIGHLIGHTS * Samsung has showcased a new All Around Full Screen Display tech recently. * According to reports, it’s the next-generation display tech with zero bezels. * According to a leaked marketing slide shared by the Twitter tipster Revengus or @Tech_Reve, Samsung has recently showcased a new display tech at an event. * The slide reveals the name of the new display tech: All Around Full Screen. * The South Korean brand showcased the new display tech after Apple reportedly asked for a zero-bezel iPhone display. * Samsung has also announced a couple of advancements for the under-panel camera (UPC). Samsung Display is the world's biggest OLED panel maker for mobile devices, and it has made OLED panels for almost all high-end phones, including all flagship iPhones, since the iPhone X. After moving from conventional OLED panels to almost bezel-less panels for modern-day smartphones, the company wants to make OLED panels with zero bezels. Samsung Display showcased (via Revegnus) its vision for the future of smartphones. Alongside early near bezel-less OLED screens with a notch at the top, the company showcased the current-generation OLED panels with a punch hole and pill-shaped cutouts for front-facing cameras. Such panels, according to the company, will completely wrap around the front of a smartphone, effectively leaving no bezel on the front. Such zero-bezel screens would feature 3D lamination technologies and edge brightness control. Sometime back ,it was reported that Apple asked its display panel suppliers—LG Display and Samsung Display—to develop zero-bezel display panels for future smartphones. We have to still wait for such phones, and once Samsung develops such displays, we can also expect flagship Galaxy phones to feature similar screens. Samsung has also developed UPC (Under-Panel Camera) for smartphones, and such panels are used in the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5. future smartphones could have zero-bezel screens with no visible cutout for front-facing cameras. As per the slide, Samsung was displaying the evolution of display tech from notch to punch-hole to what it’s calling All Around Full-Screen display. Chaebol has showcased the next generation of display tech at an event. The company displayed the evolution of the iPhone display from a wide notch to a dynamic island to the zero-bezel display. The Elec reported that Apple had asked its display suppliers, Samsung Display and LG Display, to develop zero-bezel OLED panels. Samsung has started developing the display ahead of its competitor LG Display. The leaked image shows 3D lamination and edge brightness control under the Zero Bezel heading. 3D Lamination is Samsung’s proprietary edge panel technology for making curved screen edges for Samsung flagships. It is said that it will take years for companies to come out with a zero bezel screen as it requires bending circuits under the bezel area and securing enough space for the antenna to function without interruption. Samsung has mentioned high transmittance and optimized pixel structure for under-panel cameras (UPC). All Around Full Screen display should feature an under-display camera. iPhone 16 Pro series is rumoured to come with a UPC. We can see an all-around full-screen display on the next iPhone in the future. Faqs 1) What’s the biggest issue with under display cameras ? Ans) The biggest issue with under-display cameras is finding the balance between screen PPI and light transmittance. If PPI is reduced and transmittance increased, the camera area looks blurred, and if PPI is increased with lower transmittance, then the picture quality suffers. With its new display tech, Samsung claims to have achieved 50% higher transmittance and optimized pixel structure for excellent output. 2) Galaxy Z Fold 5 is the third phone to use Under Display Camera tech.Details? Ans) Samsung remains the only smartphone manufacturer that can hide a camera under the display of a commercially available smartphone. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 was the first to feature UDC (Under Display Camera) technology developed in-house by Samsung, and three years later, the new Galaxy Z Fold 5 does the same. Has UDC improved? As far as the hardware is concerned, Samsung is using the same 4MP UDC camera for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 as it did for the previous two models, i.e., the Z Fold 4 and Z Fold 3. The 4MP Under Display Camera has an f/1.8 aperture, 2.0-micron pixels, and a field of view of 80 degrees. As the name implies, the Under Display Camera sits behind the Galaxy Z Fold 5’s 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display. It’s hidden behind a circular area that’s only partly covered by display sub-pixels, and as a result, it can capture light and create photos while staying almost invisible. 3) The Galaxy Z Fold 5’s UDC sensor is the same.Details? Ans) The inherent issue with UDC technology is that sensors hidden behind a display have a lower resolution and capture less light than traditional cameras. Thus, they can’t (yet) match selfie shooters in terms of image quality. But as far as its Z Fold line goes, Samsung believes the UDC technology’s shortcomings are a worthy trade-off if it can create a foldable display with no interruptions and intrusive punch hole cutouts. Upon announcing the brand-new Galaxy Z Fold 5 at Galaxy Unpacked in Seoul, Samsung hasn’t talked much about the UDC camera but confirmed that the new foldable flagship uses the same 4MP UDC sensor as before. However, whether or not photo quality and (in)visibility have improved is to be determined. Last year, even though the Galaxy Z Fold 4 reused the 4MP UDC that debuted in 2021, Samsung elevated the experience through advanced AI techniques for image restoration and rearranging the foldable display’s sub-pixels around the UDC area. These advancements brought the quality of UDC photos to a higher level and better hid the Under Display Camera behind the foldable panel.
