The Walt Disney Company has entered into a landmark partnership with OpenAI, becoming the first major content licensing partner for Sora. The agreement opens up new possibilities for imaginative, fan-driven storytelling using Disney’s globally recognised characters and worlds. Sora is OpenAI’s short-form generative AI video platform.

Disney and OpenAI’s Sora Join Hands

Under the three-year licensing agreement, Sora will be able to generate short, user-prompted social videos that fans can view and share. These videos will draw from a library of more than 200 animated, masked, and creature characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars.

The licensed assets also include costumes, props, vehicles, and iconic environments. Additionally, ChatGPT Images will allow users to generate fully rendered images from just a few words, using the same intellectual property. However, the agreement does not include any talent likenesses or voices.

Alongside content licensing, Disney will also become a major OpenAI customer. The company plans to use OpenAI’s APIs to build new products, tools, and experiences including integrations for Disney+. It will also deploy ChatGPT across its workforce.

As part of the deal, Disney will make a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI and will also receive warrants to purchase additional equity in the company.

Both companies have emphasised a shared commitment to the responsible use of artificial intelligence. The agreement highlights a focus on human-centred AI that prioritises user safety, protects creators’ rights, and respects the creative industries, while expanding the boundaries of modern storytelling.

As part of the partnership, OpenAI has committed to strengthening its leadership in trust and safety by implementing age-appropriate policies and additional safeguards across its services. Both OpenAI and Disney have also reaffirmed their commitment to robust controls that prevent the generation of illegal or harmful content, respect the rights of content owners in AI-generated outputs, and protect individuals’ rights to control the use of their voice and likeness.

What Does This Agreement Mean for Fans?

Under the licensing terms, fans will be able to watch curated selections of Sora-generated videos on Disney+. OpenAI and Disney will also collaborate to use OpenAI’s models to power new experiences for Disney+ subscribers, creating fresh and innovative ways for audiences to engage with Disney’s stories and characters.

Sora and ChatGPT Images are expected to begin generating fan-inspired videos featuring Disney’s multi-brand licensed characters in early 2026.

Characters available for fan creations will include Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Lilo, Stitch, Ariel, Belle, Beast, Cinderella, Baymax, Simba, and Mufasa, along with characters from Encanto, Frozen, Inside Out, Moana, Monsters Inc., Toy Story, Up, Zootopia, and more. The agreement also covers iconic animated or illustrated versions of Marvel and Lucasfilm characters such as Black Panther, Captain America, Deadpool, Groot, Iron Man, Loki, Thor, Thanos, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia, the Mandalorian, Stormtroopers, and Yoda.

The transaction remains subject to the negotiation of definitive agreements, necessary corporate and board approvals, and customary closing conditions.

Announcing the partnership, Robert A. Iger, CEO, The Walt Disney Company said, “Technological innovation has continually shaped the evolution of entertainment, bringing with it new ways to create and share great stories with the world.”

“The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence marks an important moment for our industry, and through this collaboration with OpenAI we will thoughtfully and responsibly extend the reach of our storytelling through generative AI, while respecting and protecting creators and their works. Bringing together Disney’s iconic stories and characters with OpenAI’s groundbreaking technology puts imagination and creativity directly into the hands of Disney fans in ways we’ve never seen before, giving them richer and more personal ways to connect with the Disney characters and stories they love,” Iger further added.

Sharing excitement, Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, added, “Disney is the global gold standard for storytelling, and we’re excited to partner to allow Sora and ChatGPT Images to expand the way people create and experience great content. This agreement shows how AI companies and creative leaders can work together responsibly to promote innovation that benefits society, respect the importance of creativity, and help works reach vast new audiences.”
