Earlier this year, Apple introduced a new privacy feature called “Secure Exclave” with the launch of the M4 iPad Pro. Now recent reports suggest Apple is bringing the same privacy feature to the A18 chip-powered iPhone 16.

Secure Exclave is designed to enhance user privacy.  It adds an extra layer of protection.

9to5Mac reports confirm Secure Exclave based on the iOS 18 firmware. According to the 9to5Mac report, the new SIL mechanism is also present in the A18 chip that powers all iPhone 16 models.

It is important to note that this Secure Exclave is different from the long-standing Secure Enclave, earlier used in Apple devices since the iPhone 5s to protect sensitive data like fingerprint information.

On the M4 iPads, the Secure Exclave manages the rendering of the camera and microphone indicators on the OLED display. This makes it difficult for malicious apps to access these sensors without being noticed.

The privacy enhancement comes with the Secure Indicator Light (SIL). These were first introduced on the M4 iPad Pro earlier this year.

This hardware-based mechanism uses an indicator light such as the tiny orange and green dots when the camera or microphone is in use. The indicator light is displayed directly by the hardware. This makes it nearly impossible for malware or unauthorized apps to bypass the sensor indicators.

Earlier this year, Developer Guilherme Rambo was also the one to confirm these details in another post.

“Fun fact about the M4 iPad Pro: it’s the first device to support and use Apple’s new Secure Indicator Light (SIL) mechanism. When using the microphone or camera, the corresponding indicator dot is effectively rendered in hardware (using the display), making it a lot less likely that any malware or user space app would be able to access those sensors without the user’s knowledge,” Rambo posted on Mastodon.

We have previously seen Apple using camera and microphone usage indicators in iOS 14 through software triggers. However, the new Secure Exclave technology makes this protection even stronger as the indicators are controlled directly through hardware components and not any external software.

This adds an additional safeguard against unauthorized use of these sensors.
